Hulu has ordered Ryan Coogler's reimagining of The X-Files to series, with Kawennáhere Devery Jacobs, Tantoo Cardinal and Joel D. Montgrand among the cast.

Disney announced the order on Oct. 13. Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel lead as two highly decorated but very different FBI agents who form an unlikely partnership in a long-dormant unit that handles unexplained cases. Coogler wrote and directed the pilot, and Jennifer Yale is the showrunner.

The series comes from Onyx Collective and 20th Television in association with Proximity Media. Coogler, Yale, Zinzi Coogler, Sev Ohanian and The X-Files creator Chris Carter are executive producers, and Deadwyler and Patel are co-executive producers.

Carter's original Fox series, starring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, premiered in 1993 and ran for nine seasons through 2002. Two feature films followed, in 1998 and 2008, and the show returned for revivals in 2016 and 2018. Disney has not announced any connection between the new characters and the original series.

Jacobs is Kanyen'kehà:ka (Mohawk) from Kahnawà:ke, with screen credits including Reservation Dogs and Marvel's Echo, and also works as a writer, director and producer. Jacobs is represented by Gersh and Entertainment 360.

Cardinal is Cree and Métis, from Fort McMurray, Alberta. Her career spans five decades and more than 120 roles across film, television and theatre, including Dances with Wolves, Smoke Signals and Killers of the Flower Moon.

Montgrand is Assin'skowitiniwak (Rocky Cree) and a member of Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation. He played Eddie Qavvik in True Detective: Night Country, hosts the podcast Actors and Ancestors, and guest stars in the pilot.

Jacobs has said there is no single Native experience to represent, and has called for more Indigenous storytellers, genres and voices. The cast brings performers from three distinct Indigenous Nations into one of television's best-known franchises. Their guest roles in the pilot were first reported in May.

Hulu has not announced the actors' character names, when series production begins, where it will shoot or when it will premiere.
